I tried to take the fierce qualities of a lion and wrap it in the body of a fish, substituting the hair of the mane for fins. I also have a deep love for the ocean have always been fascinated with the stories of old mariners and oceanic cultures that talk of fantastic sea creatures.
While working on this piece, I tried to carefully develop the rhythms and flow of the spines in the fins to lead the eye around smoothly.
My only regret is that I made the tail too thin for most of its length. My end goal was to create a creature that could be aquatic equivalent of a Dragon.
I designed it on paper with pencil, cleaned up the lines in India ink, scanned and set up selection sets in photoshop, and added texture in Painter.
